Journeymen began in Cape Town in 2015 as a place to learn, tinker and connect through a shared enthusiasm for Land Rover Defenders. Today, the team completes only a handful of full nut-and-bolt rebuilds each year, allowing every project to receive the time and care it deserves.
Every rebuild involves hundreds of individual tasks – from careful disassembly and mechanical preparation to detailed assembly, adjustment and final inspection. A toolkit that travelled to South Africa
The relationship between Journeymen and TengTools began with an unexpected connection. When Managing Director Adam Hughes moved to South Africa, he brought his own TengTools kit with him because he assumed the brand would not be available locally.
Little did Adam know that TengTools was already established in South Africa – or that his personal choice of tools would lead to a lasting professional relationship and a friendship with one of the directors of TengTools South Africa.
What began as a trusted toolkit from home developed naturally into a complete workshop solution. Today, Journeymen uses TengTools exclusively, supported locally by a team that understands both the products and the practical requirements of the South African workshop.
Meet Adam and Josie Hughes
Journeymen's Managing Directors, Adam Hughes and Josie Hughes, combine technical experience with a clear vision for the business.
Adam joined Journeymen in 2024. A Volkswagen-trained mechanic with experience at Morgan, he brought the technical and operational knowledge needed to develop the workshop from a passion-led project into a focused restoration business.
Josie later joined to help shape the brand and build the business alongside Adam and the wider Journeymen team. Together, they protect the character that made Journeymen special from the beginning while creating a professional experience for customers commissioning a highly personal rebuild.
Global leadership, local relationships
In September 2026, Journeymen welcomed Stian Ström, Chief Executive Officer of TengTools, and Joakim Ahlström, Global Key Account Manager, to its Cape Town workshop.
The visit created an opportunity to see how TengTools solutions are used in a specialist restoration environment, exchange ideas with the Journeymen team and strengthen the connection between global product expertise and local, hands-on craftsmanship.
For Stian and Joakim, the workshop offered a close look at the care, organisation and technical judgement behind every build. For the South African teams, it was a chance to share local experience and discuss how professional tool systems can continue to support Journeymen as the business develops.
